WINTER TRACK

1.   Boys winter track will be governed by National Federation rules.

2.   Participation:

     a.   Contestants will be limited to three events per meet for league, Section XI Team and Individual Championships, and NYSPHSAA Championship.

     b.   The three event rule may be modified to two events for all other Section XI indoor meets.

3.   Individual Competitors:
     a.  Individual competitors must participate in six indoor meets to be eligible to compete in the Section XI Individual Championship.

     b.  Individual competitors may not compete in the league or Section XI Team Championship.

     c.  Eight or more individual competitors from a school will constitute a team and must compete in the appropriate league.

4.   Team Rosters:
Schools will be issued Hytek Track and Field software for the purpose of submitting their roster via e-mail or disk.  Within one week of the season a team roster must be sent to the sport chairman.

5.   Uniforms
     a.  Uniforms consist of school-issued shirt and shorts.
     b.  Visible undergarments must be a solid color.
     c.  Relay members must have identical uniforms and identical visible undergarments.

6.   Entries
     a.  A 3x5 entry card will be required for each event in which an athlete is entered in the league, Section XI Team and Individual Championships. Each index card must include: athlete's name, his competitor number, event, and seed performance. 

     b.  Athletes are limited to three events in the Section XI Team and Individual Championships.

7.   Seeding Information:
     a.  No seed timed are permitted from relay splits or oversized tracks (over 200m). 

     b.  No seed times are permitted if an athlete or relay team was disqualified. 

     c.  Athletes must have competed in the event during the season (December - February) to receive a seed performance. No athlete will be permitted to compete in an event in which he has not established a seed time/jump/throw during that season. The only exception is a medical waiver approved by Section XI. 

     d.  Relay seeds must be actual, not composites.

     e.  Six names with competitor numbers should be listed for all relays. 

      f.  Seed times for all meets, including the NYSPHSAA Championship, will be the best actual time/jump/throw from any sanctioned meet during the season (December - February).

8.   Seeding Verification:
For competitions that are not run by Section XI, a coach will have seven days from the day of the performance to notify the sport chairman of said performance. Failure to do so could jeopardize the athlete from using those performances (seed) for the leagues, Team and Individual Championships.

9.   Spikes and Blocks: 
     a.  No spikes or shoes with plastic bottoms may be used.
     b.  Starting blocks are provided.

10.  Meet Director's Responsibilities: 
The meet director is in charge of running the meet. The meet director will assign coaches to assist him/her in running the meet. The meet director's responsibilities are: results of the meet, assisting in putting on/off  hurdles, making sure equipment is available, handing out awards when necessary, and running a smooth meet within the time frame. The meet director will notify the sport chairman of any problems. The meet director will get the final printed results and fax them to Newsday. 

11.  Jewelry: 
No jewelry, soft or otherwise, whether taped over or not, including earrings, posts, beads, rings, chains, etc., are permitted. Only soft barrettes may be used. Medical alerts may be worn if not on a chain and taped to the body. Officials will attempt to avoid violations by early warnings, but the responsibility is on the athlete. The penalty for jewelry is disqualification.

12.  Meet Modification: 
      a.  Whenever we cannot contest the 55m dash and the 55m hurdles, we will run the 50m dash and the 50m hurdles. The 50m hurdles will consist of four hurdles, and seed times will be converted for both events. 

      b.  In the long jump, one jump will be measured and all other jumps must be 17' or better. 

      c.  In the triple jump, one jump will be measured and all other jumps must be 35' or better. 

      d.  Whenever we have more than 20 schools competing at one time, or at the discretion of the meet director, we will have an open division and an intermediate division in the shot put. The open division will throw first and only one throw under 36' will be measured. A chalk line will be used to determine if a throw is measured or not. In the intermediate division all throws over 30' will be measured. If time permits, the top seven in the open division will have a final. 

13.  Clerking Responsibilities: 
      a.  All competitors are to report promptly to the clerking area or send a stand-in once the event is called. It is the athlete's responsibility to clerk on time. Once the event is clerked, it is closed. 

      b.  Verbal seeding will be used for crossover meets. Athletes are reminded that there should be no talking in the clerking area when the official is talking. The athlete could be dismissed for noncompliance. 

      c.  Athletes should come to the clerking area ready to compete (running apparel and shoes). 

      d.  It is the athlete's responsibility to notify the clerk if he is leaving the clerking area to compete in a field event. It is highly recommended that athletes have a stand-in. 

      e.  Teams will need a relay card once the event is called. The card must be properly filled out with the competitor's name, number, and seed time. At that time, the card will be handed in.

14.  Changing Meets: 
Teams will not be permitted to reschedule to different meets without the approval of the sport chairman. All requests must be in writing and approved by the school's athletic director to be considered. 

15.  Crossover Meets: 

      a.  Athletes are limited to two individual events and one relay.

      b.  Schools may have unlimited entries per event.

      c.  Verbal seeding will be used for all running events.

      d.  3x5 index cards will be used for all field events and relays. All cards must be properly filled out. 

      e.  Shot put - three throws, bring back seven to finals.

      f.  High jump will start at 5', and go up 2" until 6', then by one inch. (During the month of December the boys' high jump will start at 4' 6" go up 3" to 5' 6" then 2" to 6'.)

      g. The long and triple jumps will only be contested at Stony Brook University and Suffolk West. Athletes will have three jumps and no finals, unless there is a small field. In that case, athletes will have four jumps and no finals. 

      h.  Only one measurement under 17' will be measured in the long jump.

      i.   Only one measurement under 35' will be measured in the triple jump.

      j.   Seeded sections will run first.

      k.  Preferred lanes for 300m, 600m, 800m relay and 1600m relay: 3-4-2-5-1-6

16. League Meets

Jury of Appeals: All league representatives. 
All individual seed cards must be handed in 30 minutes prior to the meet.
Relay cards must be handed in at the beginning of the 1600m run. 
A school is permitted a total of three relay teams. (More than one relay team in an event is permitted.)
All cards must contain name, competitor number, school, event, and seed time. 
There is a coaches meeting 15 minutes prior to meet.

     a.  Schools may enter three athletes in each event. 

     b.  Athletes may enter three events. 

     c.  The top 18 athletes in the 55m dash and 55m hurdles will be seeded. All others are non-scorers. 

     d.  Seeded sections will run last.

     e.  Shot put - 3 throws, 7 to the final.

     f.  High jump - 5' up 2" to 5'10" then 1" thereafter.

     g.  Long jump, then triple jump - 3 jumps (no finals due to time). 

     h.  Order of Events:
    3200m run - seeded

LARGE AND SMALL SCHOOL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Entries for the Section XI Team and Individual Championships must be presented at the appropriate seed meeting. If a coach is unable to attend, he/she can fax or e-mail the entry to the sport chairman or the president of the coaches' association 48 hours prior to the seeding meeting. It is the coach's responsibility to make sure that his/her entry is in on time.

Coaches must arrive on time with their 3x5 index cards and entry form already filled out. A 3x5 card must be filled out for each event in which a competitor is entered. The card must include name, school, competitor number, and seed performance. The first four runners on a relay must have run the stated seed time. All seeds must be verified. Scratching will NOT be permitted at the seeding meeting. Any athlete that scratches or missed his event the day of the meet will not be allowed to compete in the remainder of the meet.

An athlete may compete in three events.

The top 24 athletes in each event will qualify. Each school is allowed one relay team per event.

All athletes must wear numbers. An athlete could be disqualified if his number cannot be read. No athlete should be disqualified if a number falls off, provided he started with the number on properly and visible. (Four pins shall secure the athlete's number.)

Seeded sections will run last (unless otherwise noted) in all races that are based on time (600m, 1000m, 1600m, 3200m, relays).

Field Events (LJ, TJ, and SP): Seven competitors return to the finals. In the finals, athletes are not permitted to jump or throw out of turn.  A competitor will be given 10 minutes, from the time he notifies the field event official, permission to compete or clerk  in another event.

High Jump will start at a height of 5'3" - 5'6" - 5'8" - 5'10" and 1" thereafter 

Pole vault will start at a height of 9' - 9'6" - 10' - 10'6" - 11' - 11'6" - 12' then 3" thereafter 
The pole vault is a non-scoring event and will be contested at a different site.

The top 12 competitors may participate except for the 55m dash and 55m hurdles, in which 18 may compete.

Relays - the best 12 relay teams in the 4 x 200m and the 4 x 400m. The best six relay teams in the 4 x 800m and two additional teams if under 8:25.

High Jump: Starting height is 5'6", then up 2" to 6' then 1" thereafter

Pole Vault: Starting height is 9' - 10' -10'6" - 11' - 11'6" - 12' then 3" thereafter.  Pole  vaulters will be weighed with their uniform prior to competition to ensure they are using the proper pole.

Field Events (long jump, triple jump and shot put): Five competitors return to the finals. In the finals athletes are not permitted to jump or throw out of turn. A competitor will be given 10 minutes, from the time he notifies the field event official, permission to compete or clerk in another event.

If an athlete is selected to compete in this meet, he is expected to participate.

Since this is a joint co-ed meet, the order of events and times have been agree to by both. There will be no change in either.

NYSPHSAA Championship Meet Qualifiers:

1. The winning team in each relay.

2.  First and second place finisher in each individual event plus the third place finisher provided he meets the qualifying standard.

3.  Intersectional Relay:                         (1000m-200m-600m-1600m)
    a.  The top non-qualifying finishers in the 300m, 600m, 1000m, and 1600m will comprise the intersectional relay.

    b.  All intersectional relay members may not compete in the NYSPHSAA meet in any other event.

Schools qualifying five or more athletes for the NYSPHSAA meet are expected to authorize their coach to be a Section XI supervisor who will travel with the athletes and assist with supervision under the direction of the sport chairman. Exceptions to this would be at the discretion of the sport chairman and the Executive Director.
